On Celestis a human colony has largely subjugated the native aboriginals. Many aboriginals undergo surgical and drug treatments to make them look and think more like humans. When some of the natives rebel against the colonists Simon, a representative from Earth, and Katherine , an "improved" native, are taken hostage by the rebels. Simon falls in love with Katherine, but cut off from the medication she requires to maintain her "humanity" she begins to discover her true self. .
