About This Item

Camp Heppner, Morrow County, OR: Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC, Nov. 7, 1940. One large oblong panoramic silver gelatin photo 19.75 x 12 in., w/ 5 inset images - 3 sized 3 x 6 in., 2 panoramic sized 3.75 x 19 in. (creasing, soiling, chipping to upper fore-edges, some curling), still a good image w/ strong bright contrast. A very scarce image of the CCC Camp Heppner established in 1935 near the Morrow County Fairgrounds, with several companies working on Soil Conservation Service projects in concert with local ranchers. Originally the camp was only to operate for two years, but proved so successful and popular for locals, that the CCC companies completed a diversion channel on Ditch Creek for local farmers, straightened and widened Willow Creek’s flow through town, which was the first serious flood control work in the town in three decades after the catastrophic 1903 flood. This image depicts the Camp just months before it’s closure, and some workers were retained by the local community which set up a Soil Conservation District. See: William Lansing, Camps and Calluses, The Civilian Conservation Corps in Southwestern Oregon (2014).
