About This Item
"The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. 3rd UK Edition, 1957. Published in hardback by Hamish Hamilton. The book is in Very Good condition for its age. The binding is tight and there is no shelf lean or bowing present. The page edge blocks are clean although the top edge is a tad dusty. The boards are clean. Internally the book is in very clean condition and has clearly been well cared for over the years. It is inscription/annotation and foxing free. The dustjacket is in Good Plus condition. It is a 4th Impression jacket as opposed to the usually see 5th Impression one. They were essentially the same design and the only difference was in the numerical number. It has a short (approx. 20mm) semi-closed tear on the side of the spine at the head. The title of the book has faded completely on the spine of the dustjacket, as often seen with this title. The dustjacket is now protected by a removable see-through sleeve. The book does have some cosmetic depredations. 1. There is a dent on the top, right corner of the front board. 2. The first 90 or so pages have a very small crease to the top, right corner (possibly caused at the same time as (1). 3. There are offsetting stains to the front and rear endpapers. 4. There is sunning to the head of the spine, probably caused by the semi-closed tear allowing light in. 5. The rear panel of the dustjacket has some scuff marks. 6. There is a fully closed tear on the rear panel of the dustjacket (approx. 100mm long). See scans of these depredations. Overall, a nice early copy of an iconic book. Any questions, please just ask.
Synopsis
Published in 1951, The Catcher in the Rye has become a common part of high school and college curricula throughout the English-speaking world and has been translated into all major languages. Since its publication with a $3.00 sticker, it has reportedly sold more than 65 million copies. The novel's antihero, Holden Caulfield, has become a cultural icon for teenage rebellion. Due to its liberal use of profanity and portrayal of sexuality and teenage angst, it has frequently been met with censorship challenges in the United States making it one of the most challenged books of the 20th century.
