About This Item
Minister of Justice and Public Instruction. Sydney. 1876. 8vo.. pp. viii, (ii), 64, 3 Index, (i) blank. Original quarter-calf, a little worn at the spine ends, oval engraved book-label of ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND of Austria, a very good copy overall. *Remarkable provenance - Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria (18 December 1863 28 June 1914) was the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary. His assassination in Sarajevo is considered the most immediate cause of World War I. He was a dedicated game hunter and kept meticulous records of his numerous hunting expeditions. During his life-time, it is recorded that he killed close on 275,000 animals. His world tour of 1892-1893 included time in Australia and it is no surprise to see that this catalogue was in his archive. TOGETHER WITH : FREDERICK WILLIAM, Crown Prince of the German Empire and of Prussia. From My Hunting Day-Book. [Translated by J. E. HODDER WILLIAMS. Hodder & Stoughton. London. 1912. pp. xv, (i), 131, (i). Coloured portrait frontispiece, 28 plates. Original cloth gilt, the lower corner of the book-block damp-marked, scarcely affecting the interior, more visible on the binding. *INTRODUCTION. 'In submitting this book to the reading public I Confess to a certain sense of embarrassment. I should like from the first to warn my readers against harbouring any false illusions. I do not pretend to claim any literary merit.......... [these] are just pages taken from the hunting diary of a man who loves open-air sport, and to whom Nature, grand and beautiful, is an inexhaustible [not any more] source of delight and joy [alive or dead].'
