Self, 1936., 1936. Three volumes. 4tos. Pages unnunmbered (Approx. 150, 200, 200 pp.). Each case is illustrated with B & W photographs with tissue guards. Bound in textured oatmeal-colored cloth, raised spinal bands, gilt-stamped black leather spinal labels. This incredible work comprises the meticulous records of approximately 92 surgical cases from Dr. Goff s practice, compiled for his application for Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (original letter laid in). As noted he prepared the histories on typewritten paper, the photos on special thick stock, and had the collection beautifully bound in 3 volumes. Each case includes the history and physical, photos, operative note, follow-up notes, and critical discussion. The sheer breadth of the cases is amazing to those physicians used to the sub-specialization of modern surgeons. Goff s cases include a wide range of abdominal surgeries, fractures, spine fusions, thoracic surgery, breast & other oncologic surgery, rhinoplasty, correction of various orthopedic congenital anomalies etc., etc. Goff was 39 yrs old in 1936. Charles Weer Goff (1897-1975) was a prominent surgeon who practiced at Hartford Hospital, Newington Children s Hospital, and St. Francis Hospital in Connecticut. Goff was known also as an anatomist and archaeologist. He earned his M.D. from U. Illinois in 1923, was on the clinical faculty at Yale 1929-1965, working at several hospitals in New Haven and Hartford counties. He began archaeological research in 1945, esp. the study of Christopher Columbus and the indigenous peoples of Central & South America. Combining his orthopedic, forensic, and archaeological knowledge to analyze osseous remains, he claimed to demonstrate in 1959 that Columbus s remains were located in Santo Domingo and the body in the Tomb of Columbus in Seville was that of his son Diego. (Yale archives). He coauthored a multi-volume work on archaeological ruins in Guatemala, as well as several works on surgery. Other than some wear around the leather spinal labels, and some age toning of the pages, this is a fine set. The letter is raged around the edges. A singular, rare look into the practice and thought of an important, cultured surgeon.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine.
