About This Item
Germany, 1848. Bound illustrations with ex-libris plate of noted Oxford historian Francis Pierrpont Barnard with name and note stating ex Don York Powell (Don of Modern History Oxford) with pencil note in Barnards hand stating "c1848 I believe never used" with his initial beneath. He thought that these were prior to the 1850 Stuttgart edition in colour. The illustrations are the same as the 1850 illustrations but are risque although not rude. CONDITION 48 illustration are gathered and privately bound in Blue buckram which is well faded and stored in a damp basement at some stage, leather title flag has been chipped off so as not to easily identify title, untrimmed illustrations are mostly very nice with some atmospheric spotting. Tight copy would benefit from a nicer and sensitive rebinding.. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
