About This Item

Paris: Didier Robert de Vaugoundy, 1773. Very Good. [11.75x15in, neatline, 13.75x15.5in sheet] Colored map comparing four maps of Hudson Bay - Sanson 1650 (mislabeled 1750), Del'isle 1700, Del'isle 1073 and Henry Ellis Carte de la Baye d'Hudson 1747; Light age toning and soiling, narrow margins, six fold creases, spot in lower margin, small closed tear in right margin, red ink on bottom edge. [Wagner 637; Rumsey 10402.014] CS. This map was one of a 10 map series for the Supplement to Diderot's "Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers" published in 1777. From Rumsey, "This series of 10 maps was prepared by Vaugondy for the Supplement to Diderot's Encyclopédie. This seminal map series, exploring the mapping of North American and specifically the Northwest Passage was one of the first studies in comparative cartography. Philippe Buache's Considerations Geographiques Et Physiques Sur Les Nouvelles Decouvertes Au Nord de La Grande Mer Appellee Vulgairement La Mer Du Sud, published an earlier comparative cartography study of the same area.

This map was from the library of the late Dr. G. Warren Smith of Pennsylvania. He had a long career as university professor and administrator, and was a collector of over 6,000 books, maps, illustrations, and artifacts relating to the Arctic, Alaska and Pacific Northwest.
