Description:
LONDON: L REEVE & CO., 1884 Plate volume only. In half leather binding with morocco leather and marbled boards. With 82 finely engraved colour printed plates of butterflies, caterpillars and their food plants. The binding has raised bands to the spine and gilt decoration and titles. It has some scuffing to the spine and wear, and wear to corners, removing the top surface of the leather. With matching marbled endpapers. The front pastedown endpaper has a small hole. The contents have some brown spotting - this mainly affects the initial leaves and early plates, but there is occasional spotting later on. The plates are not tissue guarded so there is some offsetting to the reverse of the preceding plate page. Page edges have browning.

Lugdini: Piestre et Delamolliere, 1789 An exceptionally rare work published after Linnaeus' death from his papers. Linnaeus is more commonly known for his work on the classification of plants. This set is volumes I-III only of the 4 published and looks to have been bound without plates. It spent some time in the Berlin collection of the University of Chicago Library. Vol I, 765pp plus errata; Vol II 656 pp; Vol III 657pp. Classed as 'poor' because the cloth and marbled board bindings are shaken and scuffed and have library markings; there are library markings on endpapers and blind stamps to title pages and the odd library number elsewhere to preliminaries; some pages have been repaired and there are no plates. However the text is all present and is clean and the contents bar the library annoyances are in good to very good condition.

LONDON : John Van Voorst, 1856 A VG copy of the first edition in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one plain plate as called for. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear. The binding and the original endpapers are in very good clean condition with only a very slight marking to the top of the boards. The contents are also very clean and bright. The reverse of the plates have shadows of the plate images but there is little offsetting to the text. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.

Jacket clean and bright. Laid-in tri-fold pamphlet from the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. xxvi + 230 pages. Crossing stick bridges over swollen rivers and battling swarms of tsetse flies, Mark and Delia Owens found their way into one of the most startlingly beautiful, wild places on earth, the northern Luangwa Valley in Zambia. As they were setting up camp to launch their lion research, gunfire echoed off the cliffs nearby. Gangs of ivory poachers were not only shooting the elephants but also virtually enslaving local villagers. Against unimaginable odds, Mark and Delia stopped the poaching by helping the villagers find other work, start small businesses, and improve their health care and education. Living with wild creatures all around (lions sleeping…

Jacket lightly rubbed with a single one inch tear to front bottom edge. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. xiii + 347 pages. Over 300 illustrations. Heavy book: extra charges for expedited or international shipping. Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and…
