King Carlos II, the last of the Spanish Hapsburgs reigned in the 17th Century-a cruel age, beset by violence, witchcraft, and court intrigue. Carlos lived with birth defects, was a degenerate, and could not produce an heir, and on his death Europe would plunge into the War of the Spanish Succession. This book is a lot things- an account of the Hapsburg dynasty, of Spain in her decline, of religious fanaticism, of greed and political madness, and a court that kept Carlos alive as a matter of national policy. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
