A Paris: Chez Estienne Michallet, 1699. Hardcover. Very Good. Dixième [tenth] edition. 12mo. pp. [32], 52, 662, xliv, [6]. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine in six compartments with leather titling label, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Title page printed in red and black with Michallet's monogram, woodcut initials and head and tail-pieces. Small autograph note, stamp, and signature of a noted American psychologist on front fly leaf, contemporary light marginal notes written in a neat hand, the spine gilt is rubbed, modest wear to the joints and edges of the boards, about near fine. An attractive early edition of Jean de La Bruyère's classic work, one of the masterpieces of French literature, in the original boards.
