A staple among good cooks inside & outside the Beltway since first published as "The White House Cookbook" in 1887 & much scarcer than that edition! In 440 pages with Index in rear, line drawings of food throughout, + 3 glossy plates featuring former first ladies Edith Carew Roosevelt (second wife of President Theodore Roosevelt who served as First Lady during his two terms), Ida Saxton McKinley, who served 1897-1901, until her husband was assassinated, & Helen Herron Taft, first lady from 1909-1913. Recipes cut out from a 1924 newspaper pasted in front & back matter & inside both covers, with some remnants of period advertisements. Orig. published in 1894, this is a slightly later edition from Saalfied from 1917. Hardcover 8vo is in Good condition: light blue-gray cloth-covered board show a stamped darker blue image of the US Capitol & lettering to front & spine. External soil, rubbing, heavy foxing. Else, contents are generally quite clean, though heavily tanned & becoming brittle; tears & chipping to frontispiece & title pag. Binding very strong & straight.
