William Blackwood. London 1900 1st edition.. Ownership inscription. boards much handled, especially spine, fold-out map fold attaching map into book torn but still attached. A Good sound copy and not unattractive with no serious external defects.. Original mango cloth boards, 180pp + 32pp publisher's catalogue. illustrated with 2 maps, one fold-out map. 8vo. Inscribed "John Cruikshank, 13 ?? Terrace, Dundee, March 1900". With authors sense of humour this is one of the great classics of the Boer War. Author was besieged in Ladysmith, and died there of a fever Jan 15 1900 just weeks before its relief. (obituary in The Graphic 2/04/1900). The last chapter by Vernon Blackwood is an appreciation of the author and records many compliments from others.
