About This Item

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: John C. Winston Co., 1913. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Good/Good. Early 20th-century YA series featuring the adventuresome Campfire Girls, modeled after the real organization of the same name, which had started in 1910 as the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. The series was written by various women authors through the 1930s. This book is #1 of 14 penned by one by one of the most prolific writers, Margaret Vandercook. Orig. published in 1913, this is a slightly later printing: thinner book, listing to book #6 on rear DJ flap, no lists in book. In 256 pages, with decorative endpapers, frontispiece + 3 internal illustrations by an uncredited artist. Hardcover 8vo has yellow-brown cloth-covered boards with a red & black stamped image of girls rowing a canoe to front, black lettering to front & spine. Condition is Good+: generally clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, but rear one starting. Minor rubbing to extremities, heavier, with some insect damage, along bottom edge of rear board. Pages moderately tanned (heavier to edges) but unmarked save for former owners name & Xmas 1920 to ffep. The unclipped DJ (replicating the same image as the front book cover, with a tan-cream background) is Good- (minus): largely intact, but with chipping, paper loss which is heaviest to all corners & both ends of spine. Protected by former owner in clear mylar cover. Our photos depict the EXACT book you will receive from us--never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.

Synopsis

From the book:"Oh dear, I do wish some one would invent something new for girls!" she exclaimed, although there was no one in the room to hear her. "It seems to me that all girls do nowadays is to imitate boys. We play their games, read their old books and even do their work, when all the time girls are really wanting girl things. I agree with King Solomon: 'The thing that hath been, it is that which, shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done; and there is no new thing under the sun.' At least not for girls!" Then with a laugh at her own pessimism, Betty, like Hamlet, having found relief in soliloquy, jumped up from her chair and crossing her room pressed the electric button near the fireplace until the noise of its ringing reverberated through the big, quiet house.
