London, Smith, Elder & Co. 1868.. Hardback, Tall 8vo. Approx 9 x 5.5 inches. Quarter bound in maroon morocco leather to spine and corners and marbled paper boards. Marbled endpapers, red speckled page edges. Raised banding, gilt lettering and decoration to spine. In very good condition. Some light rubbing to cover and boards with some minor fading to spine. Some handling marks. Cloth reinforced inner hinges to binding. No penned inscriptions. Some minor spots and handling marks to illustrations list. Else inside pages and plates all very clean and tight throughout. Rear endpaper has some minor darkening and chip to edge, small rubbed hole to margin of last couple of pages (just misses text.) Else a very good clean and tight copy. 760pp. Illustrated with 12 full-page B&W plates and with a similar illustrated chapter heading/letterpiece opposite each plate. This is a "dispatch sent from Antalo, Africa, March 10, 1868......Indiana has a copy of a letter corroborating the authenticity of this dispatch by Henty which was not signed." (Dart pp.42).
