About This Item
London, New York: Seeley and Co., MacMillan Company, 1900. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Scarce hardcover in this condition at this price point. Very nice copy of the first edition of this important and scholarly work on the history of cameos. (A total of 18 editions were published between 1900 and 1975, and this first edition was the subject of an enthusiastic and detailed article in the May 11, 1901 edition of The Saturday Review, which is available online). Twelve full color illustrations and dozens of monochrome images. A standout is the head of Medusa rendered in amethyst. Contents include materials and processes of cutting, early cameos and glass pastes, Greco-Roman and medieval cameos, and Renaissance and later cameos. Tissues intact, including frontispiece; no owner markings; all gilt lettering and gilt central cover design are bright and complete; denting to head, tail of spine and top right corner (see photos); light edge tanning; foxing in last two advertisement (non-content) pages. Please feel free to email if more questions on condition. All illustrations printed by Edmund Evans of the Racquet Court Press. This was published before the advent of ISBNs.
