Editio Nova" (New Edition), annotated/edited by Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (Latinized to Boxhornius on the title page), who had died 6 years earlier. Boxhorn was an important linguist before it was a separate science; he was the first to propose the existence of Proto-Indoeuropean, which he called Scythian. This is a 16mo volume with rather small type, bound in full vellum with a leather title piece. Good plus; the vellum is warped so that the front cover has begun to separate, and the front pastedown is torn. Has all-edge gilt but the top is quite dull. 404 pp. + index. Owner's names on the obverse of ffep and facing page; one of these has left a note, "collates perfect". (I didn't check.) The text is free of any writing or foxing.

First Edition in English of this neo-Latin poem on procreation, pregnancy, and the raising of children, the translation of which (from the French) is attributed in subsequent editions to William Oldisworth. Foolscap 8vo (163 x 98mm): [16],72,[8]pp, complete with all five full-page engravings by Elisha Kirkall (the plates apparently were not ready when the book was issued and are often lacking, as with all three copies at the British Library) and four final index and advertisement leaves. Contemporary speckled sheep with handsome patina, boards framed with single gilt fillet, spine in six compartments between raised bands, recent morocco lettering piece gilt. Rubbing and scuffs to boards and spine, joints skillfully repaired, binding now sturdy and secure. Pages generally clean, with the plates in deep, rich impressions. Unsophisticated, and charmingly so. Case 253. Foxon O142. Wellcome IV p. 457. First published in Leiden, in 1655, and in Paris, in 1656. A Latin version was issued in London in 1708; two editions in English (the other printed for John Morphew) appeared in 1710 and in 1712. The French abbe Claude Quillet's poem concerns not only raising children but also choosing the right wife, and offers thoughts on marriage, divided into four books: "The First treats of the Nature and Variety of Beauty, and of the Choice of a Wife. The Second, of Marriage and Enjoyment, with Laws and Rules relating to both, from Nature and Astrology. The Third, of Conception, and Imagination. The Fourth and Last, of the Beauty of the Mind, of Education and Virtue, and of the Variety of Climes, Customs, and Manners." N. B. (8vo) 16.5x10 cm (6½x4") disbound, the spine mended with archival tape, housed in a modern custom cloth case. Outer blanks with staining from the original binding; light foxing within; very good First Edition in English. Lowndes, IV, p. 2025. The poem by the French abbé Claude Quillett (1602-1661) was first published in Leiden in 1655 and in Paris in 1656. A Latin version was issued in London in 1708. Two English versions appeared in 1710 and another in 1712. The plates by Elisha Kirkall (1682-1742) were not ready when the book was issued and are thus often lacking, as is the case here. Later editions contain William Oldisworth's name on the title-page, identified as translator.

Venetiis: Ex typographia Remondini, 1751. Hardcover. See Description. 12mo. pp. 143, [1]. Title page is printed in red and black. Bound in modern quarter brown cloth with brown patterned paper boards. The edges of the leaves are untrimmed and ragged. The interior displays some marginal soiling and wear with occasional chipping and corner creasing. A tear on the lower part of page 19 is professionally and neatly sealed. The upper corner to the final leaf of the index is chipped/torn perhaps affecting a few numbers or letters. The imprint statement on the title page contains some rubbing which obstructs two letters in the word "typographia." A few brief instances of marginalia are written in a miniscule old hand. The corner of the head cap is neatly patched. Generally this is a well read copy. Cornelius Nepos (c. 99-24 b.c.e) was a Roman writer and historian.
