About This Item

New York: Robert O. Ballou, 1935. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good. A handsome copy of the January 1935 2nd printing (following the 1st printing by 1 month), in the same iconic pictorial dustjacket illustrated by Stuyvesant Van Veem. Solid and VG+ (a touch of light offsetting at the inner hinges) in a crisp, price-intact, VG dustjacket, with very light chipping and creasing along the spine ends and panel edges, and a 1" chip at the rear panel's lower-edge. Still though, a very presentable copy of a fragile book, a book whose secure stature as a highly-accomplished novelization of Jewish immigrant life in early 20th century New York would take several more decades to grow into.

Synopsis

Call It Sleep is a 1934 novel by Henry Roth. Time magazine described it as "The story of three years in the life of a sensitive Jewish slum-child, told with painstaking and pain-giving fidelity," in the February 25, 1935 edition. While the book sold poorly upon its initial publication, the book received a second life when it was reviewed by literary critic Irving Howe on the front page of The New York Times Book Review on October 25, 1964, and has since sold over a million copies.
