1939. DRURY, Aubrey. CALIFORNIA: AN INTIMATE GUIDE. NY: Harper & Brothers, 1939. 8vo., blue cloth. First Edition, later printing. Signed presentation from Drury on the front endpaper: "To Dr. J.T. Johnson, with cordial greetings from his co-worker in the Metric cause, Aubrey Drury, the author." J.T. Johnson was the president of the U.S. Metric Association from 1935 to 1961. The association advocates converting the U.S. measurement system to metric. Drury was also a member of the association and authored a book on world metric standardization in 1922. A nice association copy between two important metric system advocates. Good (bit of wear & soil covers with faint stains on the rear cover & bit of fraying to edge; contents clean & tight with bit of soil & toning endpapers; rear index page has small chips & few short tears). $27.50.

Top text block edge tanning, remaining edges starting to tan; fore edge foxing. Endpapers starting to fox and tan; bookplate on front pastedown. Gutters cracked and strained, volume quite loose. Numerous fore edges neatly cut, pages starting to tan. Otherwise, internally neat and clean

Endpapers toned, paper labels rubbed with the one on sunned spine chipped. Noted conservationist of Save-the-Redwoods League and past president of the California Historical Society designed a travel guide that "aims to render travels in the Golden State even more interesting and enjoyable, and to aid the general reader to a better appreciation of regions throughout the length and breadth of California."
