Light brown spotting (acidic paper reaction) to upper & leading text edges. Map to endpapers. Volume II; history of Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). HBC, a British colonial trading company established by Royal Charter in 1670; it was granted all lands draining into Hudson Bay for commercial exploitation, principally trade in fur. Their frontier monopoly was soon challenged by independent traders who formed the North West Company; the competing merchant/adventurers engaged in drawn out guerilla warfare until amalgamation in 1821. Operation continued until handing over control to the new Canadian government, 1870; it is now a Canadian retail and wholesale operation. Text in 3 parts: I, Empire at Risk; II, Empire Triumphant; and, III, End of Empire.
