About This Item
New York: Random House, 1977. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near fine/fine. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing of this Limited Edition, being Number 913 of 1,000 copies SIGNED BY LAWRENCE BLOCK on a special plate affixed to the front free endpaper's recto; being a tight and unread copy with some shelf wear to the bottom edge of each board and with the price-clipped dust jacket showing some toning and a tiny tear to the font panel's top edge. The novel introduces Block's great detective Bernie Rhodenbarr. The book wears its Fine, lightly toned dust jacket and shows the ownership embossment of noted collector Bert Wade to the Limitation Page as well as to the half-title page. Per Wikipedia: "Rhodenbarr is ageless, remaining essentially the same from 1977's Burglars Can't Be Choosers, to the eleventh and most recent entry, 2013's The Burglar Who Counted the Spoons. The only significant advancements come in the third volume, The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling (1979, winner of the first annual Nero Award) which sees Bernie having used the spoils from his previous caper to buy a bookstore, and introduces Carolyn Kaiser, his lesbian "soulmate" and partner in crime. " Lawrence Block was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 1994.
