About This Item
Richmond: B.F. Johnson, 1900. FIRST EDITION. Green cloth with silver vignette on front cover, gray end-papers, boards scuffed and soiled; ex-libris, but overall very good with a solid clean text block. First edition of this detailed account of the career and adventures of the Baylor Light Horse, Company B of the Twelfth Virginia Cavalry. According to Nevins, this work is "a much consulted memoir by a Virginia Cavalryman; especially good for Baylor's discerning observations." Baylor (1842-1902) was one of three sons of Colonel Robert William Baylor, who led the Virginia cavalry militia in defense of Harper's Ferry during John Brown's Raid in October 1859. Following the war, he became an attorney, ultimately the chief legal counsel to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the line that he raided with such enthusiasm as a young man. Nevins, I, 55.
