Dedicated to Ellis Peters and based upon his twenty books "The Brother Cadfael Chronicles" featuring the enthusiastic gardener and herbalist Brother Cadfael, "this beautifully illustrated book re-creates Brother Cadfael's herbal kingdom. It begins by tracing the history of herbals and herb gardens, and places Cadfael's herb garden in the context of the monastic gardens at Shrewsbury (England)." Included is an A-Z section that lists all the herbs and plants mentioned in the Chronicles and explains their various uses in medieval times.
