Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1888. First edition. Hardcover. Very good overall. Author's signed copy to "Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, with the kind regards of his obliged friend, the author. Curtis Guild, Boston Feb 27, 1888". The engraved bookplate of Oliver Wendell Holmes's son with a nautilus shell and motto, "Per Ampliora Ad Altiora" indicating that the book was from his father's library, at the front of the volume.
The work includes wonderful detail on what to expect when traveling in Russia: "... no one is allowed to cross the frontier without proper authority ... it may be more difficult to get out of the country than to get in (p228). Also descriptions of St. Petersburg, the Winter Palace, Peter the Great, Moscow, Siberia, Nijni Novgorod, and Russia's power & possibilities.
8vo, xii, 230 pp. Green gilt cloth, private library paper label at base of spine, and handsome engraved library plate of the Berkshire Athenaeum at rear.
