About This Item
1756. HILL, John. THE BRITISH HERBAL: AN HISTORY OF PALNTS AND TREES, NATIVES OF BRITAIN, CULTIVATED FOR USE, OR RAISED FOR BEAUTY. London: Printed for T. Osborne, J. Shipton, J.Hodges, J. Newbery, B. Collins, S. Crowder and H. Woodgate, 1756. First edition. Folio. 40 cm.x 25 cm. [4], 533, [3,index]; frontispiece and 75 plates. Text printed in double columns. Allegorical engraved frontispiece, "The Genius of Health", by H. Roberts after Samuel Wale. 75 engraved plates, C. A. Edwards & Darly, Boyce, and others. This is an ex-library copy with only a handful of unabtrusive stamps, not effecting the plates. There is dampstaining along the bottom right corner of the volume, as well as a long straight tear about 7" that is limited to page 477, & 479; general soiling, foxing and wear throughout. The frontis and last plate show the most wear. Full contemporary dark brown calf, front board detached. John Hill (1714?-1775) introduced the Linnean system of botanical nomenclature to England and remains "a somewhat controversial figure in the history of botany in England" As is, complete.
