About This Item
London: George Routledge and Sons, Limited, 1901. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". W. S. Coleman. A colourfully illustrated book about British butterflies, written by painter William Stephen Coleman with numerous colour plates. 1901 'New Edition'.Illustrations include a colour frontispiece, fourteen colour plates, and two black-and-white plates, all by the author. This is a lovely book which describes every native butterfly species within Great Britain, first published in 1861 and updated to reflect the new information found on butterflies at the turn of the century. Contents include subjects such as 'Butterfly Eggs' and 'Functions of Antennae', with descriptions on species such as the 'Swallowtail', 'Coloured Sulphur', and 'Marsh Ringlet'. William Stephen Coleman (1829-1904) was an English painter and book illustrator, whose most popular works include 'Our Woodlands, Heaths, and Hedges', as well as 'British Butterflies'. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minimal edge wear to the extremities with light bumping to the head and tail of spine. Light fading to bands of joints, with a few marks to rear board. Ink inscription to front paste down, and late age-toning to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with light age-toning to pages and the odd spot that increases to the first and last few pages. A blind stamp to the final page of text. Very Good
