The eighteenth edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with blind stamping and gold tooling to the front board and spine. Illustrated with fifteen plates, thirteen of which have been printed in colour by Edmund Evans. Lacking the tenth plate. Collated. A lovely late 19th century volume describing every native butterfly species within Great Britain, first published in 1861 and continually updated. Chapters include subjects such as 'Butterfly Eggs' and 'Functions of Antennae', with descriptions on species such as the 'Swallowtail', 'Coloured Sulphur', and 'Marsh Ringlet'. William Stephen Coleman (1829-1904) was an English painter and book illustrator, whose most popular works include 'Our Woodlands, Heaths, and Hedges', as well as 'British Butterflies'. 4-page publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with fading to the spine and shelf wear to the extremities. A couple of marks to the rear board. Binding is slightly strained between pages 80 and 81, but otherwise internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good
