The film was directed by Julie Taymor and starred Salma Hayek as Frida, with Alfred Molina as Diego Rivera, Diego Luna, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Antonio Banderas, Edward Norton, Geoffrey Rush as Leon Trotsky, Roger Rees, and Mia Maestro. The film won Oscars for Best Makeup and Best Music, Original Score, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Salma Hayek), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design, and Best Music, Original Song (Elliot Goldenthal, music / Julie Taymor, lyrics for the song "Burn It Blue").
