About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1875. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A charming Victorian cook-book by a prolific and acclaimed writer of household manuals. Written by Mary Virginia Terhune (1830-1922) under the pseudonym Marion Harland. Terhune was a most prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction works. In particular, her domestic writings were extremely popular and sold a profuse number of copies. This was Terhune's follow-up to her most popular work and her first piece of non-fiction, 'Common Sense in the Household: A Manual of Practical Housewifery', and subsequent in the series. A first edition.Contains chapters on gravy, whipped cream, ripe fruit, croquettes, breakfast and waste. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally a trifle rubbed, with the detail to the front boards and spine having worn away, and a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally generally firmly bound, hinges are straining but firm. Pages are generally bright and clean if a touch aged toned; pages bound to the rear to be filled in by the reader contain a number of pencil recipes. Very Good
