About This Item
American Lit 1000Hay, John, 1838-1905. The Bread-winners: a Social Study. New York: Harper and Brothers, 1884, 319p. Covers somewhat darkened, wear to edges, gift inscription from 1884 on title page, bookplate of collector on front lining paper. Good condition overall. The author was Lincoln's personal secretary and had a distinguished career in the public sector. This, his fourth book, and only novel, was written anonymously. It was first published in installments in The Century Magazine. It takes a decidedly anti-labor stance, apparently a reaction to bitter strikes that had plagued his various business interests in the 1870s and early 1880s. Hay never acknowledged writing the book, but he was widely suspected of being the author. It was only after his death that the true authorship of the book became common knowledge. BAL 7762. Wright 2608. $14.50
