Boston: Little Brown, 1949. Ninth printing. This was film director Robert Rossen’s copy used by him in creating the screenplay, and on set during filming, for his 1951 motion picture adaptation of the now classic Tom Lea novel. The book is heavily annotated in pencil throughout with many written words, sentences, and scorings written in Rossen’s hand. On the front of the cloth cover, Rossen, has written boldly written MY COPY in pencil. Very good with some fading to the spine and a minor dampstain to the cloth at the rear board in a very good dust jacket. The completed film stars Mel Ferrer and Anthony Quinn in what is considered to be one the finest films dealing with bullfighting which was beautifully photographed by Floyd Crosby and James Wong Howe on location in Mexico. Robert Rossen, one of Hollywood’s distinguished directors came under intense scrutiny by the House On Un-American Activities Committee during the filming of The Brave Bulls with Rossen being subpoenaed to testify in 1951 the year of the film’s release. Columbia Pictures decided to issue the film with little publicity and then released Rossen from his contract.
