About This Item

Seattle, Washington:: The Mountaineers, 1988. A bright, shiny, clean, square, tight copy. Sharp corners. The Dust Jacket is just a little rubbed. No chips. No tears. NOT price-clipped (32.00). Remainder mark on bottom edge. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Omnibus edition. Originally published in Great Britain in three separate volumes: I CHOSE TO CLIMB (1966), THE NEXT HORIZON (1973), and THE EVEREST YEARS (1986). Illustrated with maps and 24 pages of photographs, including 8 pages in full-color. Bound in the original blue boards, lettered in shiny silver on the spine. From the Jacket: "I CHOSE TO CLIMB, published in 1966, was Chris Bonington's first book. He was recognised then, as now, as one of the outstanding members of a brilliant generation of mountaineers, which included such personalities as Hamish MacInnes, Don Whillans and Ian Clough. Here he describes his climbing beginnings as a teenager as well as successful ascents all over the world; the first ascent of the Central Pillar of Freney, the first British ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in 1962, Annapurna II in 1960 and in an unhappy expedition in 1961, Nuptse, 'the third peak of Everest'. THE NEXT HORIZON, the second volume of autobiography, picks up the story in 1962. It relates Chris Bonington's subsequent adventures as a mountaineer, photographer, journalist and expedition leader, beginning with an expedition to Chile to climb the Central Tower of Paine and ending with preparations for the autumn Everest expedition in 1972. THE EVEREST YEARS. In 1985 Chris Bonington crowned an already distinguished mountaineering career by reaching the summit of Everest at the age of fifty -- an achievement which won him enormous popular acclaim and affection. This last volume of his autobiography chronicles his four expeditions to the world's highest peak. He tells of his fascination with the highest point on earth and why it meant so much to him finally to stand there himself.". First US Edition.. Oversize Hardcover (thick). Fine condition./Very Good+ dust jacket.. 8vo. x, 687pp. + 24 plates..
