About This Item

Pittsburgh: Various, 1939. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo, charcoal gray cloth, very good, light wear and soil to covers. Bound volume of several sermons, some of them among the first sermons to be broadcast by radio (the pioneering KDKA rose to early prominence thanks to the work by nearby Westinghouse Electric: they were the first station to broadcast the results of the 1920 Presidential election live and went on to several other "firsts."). Inscribed on the flyleaf by Orr, who was pastor at the First United Presbyterian Church of Allegheny. Includes "How We Got Our Bible" broadcast on KDKA December 6, 1925; "The Purpose of God and Predestination" broadcast 1/31/1926; "Are There Degrees in Heaven and Hell?" broadcast 2/14/1926; "The Mothers We Need" broadcast 5/9/1926; "The Soul's Anchor" broadcast 10/23/1927; "A Truly American Thanksgiving" broadcast 11/25/1928; "Prayer's Enduring Glory" broadcast 10/26/1930; "A Mighty Saviour" broadcast 11/23/1930; "Shall We Give Thanks This Year?" broadcast 11/22/1931; "Christ's Ever-Growing Kingdom" broadcast 2/28/1932; "After Repeal--What?" broadcast 11/26/1933; "The Mission of Christ's Church" broadcast 11/28/1934; "The Joyous Christian" broadcast 11/24/1935; "Christ Despairs of No One" broadcast 1/24/1936; "Is America for God?" broadcast 6/28/1936; "Sin: Punishment: Forgiveness" broadcast 10/25/1936; "If We Have Forgotten" broadcast 12/27/1936; "The Light in Thee" broadcast 4/4/1937; "How Can America Be Secure" broadcast 5/30/1937; "Eternity in a Man's Heart" broadcast 6/27/1937; "The Omnipresence of God" broadcast 10/24/1937; "Prayer's Wondrous Help" broadcast 11/28/1937; "Three Christian Certainties" broadcast 1/23/1938; "Things Which Remain" broadcast 4/23/1939; and two other sermons that don't have any information or dates: "Our Play and Amusements," and "Does Salvation Include Healing of the Body?" Hardly any copies of Orr's work appears in any institution: searching OCLC with author "John Alvin Orr" yields a single sermon at one institution; shortening his name to "J. Alvin Orr" yields a few more hits, but many of these do not appear to have made it into any library, including any in the Pittsburgh area. Exceedingly rare volume in Pittsburgh's storied radio history.
