Memoir of Linda Niemann, a woman who became a railroad brakeman on the Southern Pacific, and then a "boomer"---a brakeman who follows work as it migrates with the seasonsand with the periods of boom and bust and recession. A bisexual, counter-culture intellectual (she has PhD in English from UCAL Berkeley), she brings the diversity of her complex nature to the stories of the people who work the trains and the parts of the country to which her travels took her.
