First edition, large 8vo, pp. xx, 142; frontis. and 89 facsimiles, some in color; slightly soiled orig. cream paper wrappers printed in red and black; fine. With a foreword by Norman Fiering. Johnson divides her work on books and printing into a section each for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin America, which are then subdivided into the viceroyalties of New Spain, Peru, and Rio de la Plato, the North American borderlands and other possessions (Spanish), and Brazil (Portuguese). Newbury's supplement provides a full bibliographical description of the early books along with their location. Review copy with slip laid in.
