FIRST EDITION. Octavo, 270 pp., [1] leaf (ads) attractive contemporary paneled calf. No spine label. Half-title is present and the text is very fresh for its age with white pages. The rear hinge is a little weak and shaken, but an excellent contemporary copy usually found rebound or in later bindings. Housed and chemised in a quarter morocco slipcase with marbled boards and a green morocco label by the Heritage Bindery which will insure protection. British clergyman Francis Hutchinson was "the man who gave the coup de grace to the witch delusion in England" (Robbins), leveling "a final and deadly blow at the dying superstition" (Note stein). All edges of the book block are gilt. The binding contains areas of rubbing and wear; minor careful restoration is present to the head cap of the spine and to the corner tips of the boards. The upper corner tip of the front blank fly leaf is restored. Interior pages show some light age-toning and scattered mild foxing but are generally clean. This is a Latin translation from the Greek of the seven tragedies of Sophocles - Ajax Flagellifer, Electra, Oedipus Tyrannus, Antigone, Oedipus Coloneus, Trachiniae, Philoctetes. The translation and notes are by Thomas Kirchmeyer (Naogeorgus) 1508-1563, was an influential dramatist, humanist and Lutheran theologian. Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"
