About This Item
Machinery & Allied Products Institute. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1945. 1st Ed, 1st Prtg. Cloth. Prev. owner name on front pastedown. Very scarce fine dust jacket in mylar cover. xviii + 263 pp. Index. The author, a U. Of Chicago Ph.d, criticises the "stagnation theses" influential during the 1930s and 1940s. The gist was that investment opportunities had dried up (the economy was "senile" said Robert Nathan) and the return to peace time after WW II would lead to disaster unless the Federal government ran continued large deficits. Alvin Hanson of Harvard is the main target here, but the argument is mainly statistical rather than polemic. Interesting chapter on the the Great Depression, concluding that it was not caused by the sudden vanishing of investment opportunites. .
