About This Item

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1895. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". H. J. Ford; G. P. Jacomb-Hood. The seventh edition of Lang's popular Blue Fairy Book, illustrated with beautiful engravings. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. All edges gilt. Ink inscription to the first blank page. 7 plates including the frontispiece, and numerous illustrations in the text. Collated complete. The Blue Fairy Book assembles a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norwegian fairytales, among other sources. It is the first volume in Lang's series of 25 Fairy Books, and so it contains some of the best-known tales. It is illustrated with delightful engravings by Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) and George Percy Jacomb-Hood (1857-1929). In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally smart, with a little wear to the extremities, joints and head and tail of the spine. Internally, the binding is slightly strained in a couple of places. Pages are generally clean with the odd spot, with more spotting to the first and last pages. Very Good

Synopsis

The Fairy Books, or "Coloured" Fairy Books is a collection of fairy tales divided into twelve books, each associated with a different colour. Collected together by Andrew Land they are sourced from a number of different countries and were translated by Lang's wife and other translators who also retold many of the tales. The collection has been incalculably important and, although he did not source the stories himself direct from the oral tradition he can make claim to the first English translation of many.First published in 1889, The Blue Fairy Bookis the 1st volume in this series.
