The problems in Kansas began in 1854 with the Kansas/Nebraska Act that set of the fighting over which way Kansas was to turn on the issue of slavery. Thus began the border fights between Missouri and Kansas and what was called Bleeding Kansas. Union forces were sent in to maintain order from Border Ruffians like Quantrill and his band. As Quantrill caused more problems he and his gang surprised Union troops at Baxter Springs, killing many at various locations, and finally were the victors over General Blunt. Using many untapped resources, the author details the events up to, during, and after in great detail. A clean very presentable copy.
