"Although she is popularly remembered as Ottawa's pugnacious mayor - the first female mayor of a Canadian city - there are other reasons for remembering Charlotte Whitton. One of this country's first generation of professional women, she championed the cause of child welfare across the country and worked hard for the status of women long before the word 'feminism' had passed into everyday language. What the authors show, however, in this biography of Charlotte Whitton is that she does not fit comfortably into contemporary notions of the liberated woman. In spite of her progressive attitudes, she was also capable of vindictiveness, intolerance and contempt for the "undeserving". Nor was she an advocate of sexual liberation: she had conventional views on such matters as abortion, divorce and personal ethics. In the early decades of this century when a professional career and marriage were incompatible for women, Charlotte Whitton dedicated herself to a career in social service in the belief that the feminist cause would best be served by work, achievement and success. Frequently attacked for her "unladylike" behaviour, Charlotte Whitton berated her own sex for complicity in male domination and angered men in public life with her belligerent attacks on their privileges. "Whatever men do they must do it twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, it's not difficult." - Publisher's blurb.
