About This Item
A lovely first edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page and protected in an archival cover. The book is inscribed to Burt Heward, the then-book editor of the Ottawa Citizen (and a former colleague).
Burt both reviewed the book and interviewed Moore during his book tour in March, 1985, which was when Moore signed the book for Burt.
Burt, who died in 2022 at age 83, was a journalist and editor for 40 years, most of that time at the Citizen. When he died, he left a large and distinguished library. A copy of his obituary in the Citizen will be laid-in, as will the review of the book and the interview with Moore (which I have also included in the photos).
Synopsis
Black Robe is an historical novel by Brian Moore based on the Jesuit missionaries in New France. It was published in 1985. The novel takes place in the 17th century in New France. It follows Father Laforgue, a French Jesuit priest traveling up river to repopulate the mission to the Huron Indians. (The First Nations peoples called the priests "Black Robes".
