About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers: (1954). First edition with letters H-D below. Frontis., xv, 358, [1]pp. Hardcover in publisher's black and red cloth; without dust jacket. Near Fine.
Black novelist Richard Wright's non-fiction book about his 1953-1954 trip to Africa's Gold Coast (Ghana). During the 1950s, Wright made extensive foreign travels and it was he who coined the term "Black power."
"Black Power concerns itself with the color line in Africa and the new 'tragic elite,' the leaders of the former colonies. Ghanaian writer Kwame Anthony Appiah said later that Wright failed to understand Africans when he urged Africa to leave tribal custom behind and join the technological era." (ANB)
