Second printing of first US edition (rarely available in the UK). 2 volumes. With dust jackets. Black cloth boards with picture on front cover and gilt titles on spine. Upper edge of text block edged in blue. Maps on endpapers.
Dust jackets price-clipped; paper browned, especially on spine; rubbed and with small tears on edges; slight soiling in places. Boards with some corners bumped; titles slightly worn on Vol. I; very mild rubbing on edges. Pages age-toned; otherwise clean. Binding firm.
Synopsis
Black Lamb and Grey Falcon is an 1,181-page travel book written by Dame Rebecca West, published in 1941. The book gives an account of Balkan history and ethnography, and the significance of Nazism, structured about her six week trip to Yugoslavia in 1937. It made the Random House Modern Library list of the best 100 non-fiction books of the 20th century. The writer Larry McMurtry says in an essay, "... there are only a few great travel books. Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon is one...".
