About This Item

Northampton & Florence MA and Seattle,WA: Kitchen Sink Press / Fantagraphics Books, 2004. 1st printings. Saddle-stapled comics. Near fine to fine.. Twelve comics, each 32 pp (the final issue runs 48pp). with semi-glossy color cardstock covers, and b&w illustrations on glossy paper. "A handful of comics have made it into the canon of respectable modern literature, but none of them are as jarring as Charles Burns's Black Hole," reviewed Vulture. This cataloguer can attest to the excitement this series generated when it debuted in 1995, and the experience of awaiting each new issue as if it were Twin Peaks, Halloween and Christmas all rolled into one. The first four issues were published by Kitchen Sink; after the company folded, the remaining issues were published by Fantagraphics. Of note: the original series contains endpapers unique to each issue, and some pages that were cut for the graphic novel edition.

Synopsis

Charles Burns grew up in Seattle in the 1970s. Hs work rose to prominence in Art Spiegelman’s Raw magazine in the mid-1980s and took off from there, for an extraordinary range of comics and projects, from Iggy Pop album covers to the latest ad campaign for Altoids. In 1992 he designed the set for Mark Morris’s delightful restaging of The Nutcracker (renamed The Hard Nut ) at BAM. He’s illustrated covers for Time, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. He was also tapped as the official cover artist for The Believer magazine at its inception in 2003. Burns lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two daughters.
