Doubleday. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Doubleday and Co: New York, 1964. Fine Book in Fine DJ, in protective mylar. First edition (published in the UK one year later in 1965). Original price $3.50 on DJ flap. The author’s second book (preceded by The Wolves of Willoughby) set in an elaborate alternative history of Britain. Aiken was inspired by Dickens to create an intricate plot she believed helpful to children’s habit of rereading or having books reread to them.
Synopsis
Black Hearts in Battersea is a children's novel by Joan Aiken first published in 1964. The second book in the Wolves Chronicles, it is loosely a sequel to her earlier Wolves of Willoughby Chase. The book is set in a slightly altered historical England—during the reign of King James III—in the early 1800s, and follows the adventures of Simon, an orphan whose plans to study painting in London are derailed by high adventure.
