About This Item

New Rochelle, N.Y., Arlington House, 1966. First ed. Hardcover. Fine copy in near fine jacket in archival mylar./Near fine(+). 362 pages 22 cm. A very attractive copy. Memoirs of a conservative journalist and author who changed from socialism to conservatism. / "George S. Schuyler (1895-1977), an African-American author, journalist, and social commentator, earned acclaim for his critique of the racial and political spectrum of the United States during his time. Schuyler, originally from Rhode Island, started his journalism career with the Pittsburgh Courier, a prominent African-American newspaper. His satirical novel, "Black No More" (1931), stands as his most recognized work, offering a scathing critique of American race relations through a narrative where a scientific procedure can eliminate racial distinctions by turning black people white. Despite his early affiliation with socialism, Schuyler shifted towards conservatism in his later years, expressing critical views of the Civil Rights Movement and black nationalism. His writings, though controversial, significantly influenced discourse on race and politics in America, leaving a unique imprint on African-American literature and journalism." - Bing
