About This Item
South Yarra.: Hyland House Publishing Pty Ltd.. First Edition.. 1991.. Map, black and white and colour photographic plates, 140pp, spine and adjacent covers slightly sunned, corners creased, prior owner's name front free endpaper, a sound secondhand paperback copy. The story of the gold rush at Mt Kare, Papua New Guinea, in the 1990s. Behind this story lie anxious doubts about the future course of Papua New Guinea. Law and order and basic health needs were left unprovided on the gold-field. Avaricious businessmen and politicians from Port Moresby plundered the miners' hard-won wealth. Prices paid for the gold were absurdly low, and more than half was smuggled out of the country, evading payment of the modest 5% gold tax. .
