About This Item

[Independence, Missouri, May 8, 1974 etc.]. 23pp. + [12]pp. + [7]pp. Photocopies of of 3 typed Items; all in near fine condition.

A close personal friend of President Harry S. Truman, Treasury Secretary John Wesley Snyder (1895-1985) here lauds the late president at a birthday celebration in Independence, Missouri. The theme of Snyder's address to the American Legion-boldly signed-were "those first historic weeks of Harry S. Truman as President of the United States."

With the address is a second item: a memorandum signed by Snyder about President Truman's treasury bond drive of 1950-the "Independence Bond Drive." It discusses the 53 one-ton, bronze reproductions of the Liberty Bell produced for the drive and Snyder's role in presenting one to Truman which now is at the Truman Library in Independence.

The third item is a signed biographical sketch of Secretary Snyder, including his leadership at the International Monetary Fund, with his curriculum vitae and a copy of the citation for the Medal of Merit awarded to Snyder by President Truman in 1947.

"No person wielded more influence on Snyder's public career than Harry S. Truman, whom Snyder first met at Fort Riley, Kansas, in 1928.... In 1940 Snyder served as a key fundraiser in Truman's reelection campaign to the U.S. Senate. In 1944 he accompanied Truman to the Democratic National Convention. Although Truman disavowed any interest in his party's nomination for vice president, Snyder, without Truman's knowledge, privately worked to help secure this nomination for Truman.... Snyder steered the GI Bill through Congress and in June 1946 reported that the nation had largely converted to a peacetime economy without creating massive unemployment. Exhibiting his respect for Snyder's abilities, Truman nominated him as secretary of the Treasury... Snyder served on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Council from 1949 to 1953, and he was joint chair of the first meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in September 1946."
