About this book
Ornithologist B.H. Warren was born in West Chester and affiliated with the Academy, but his work centered in state government in Harrisburg. His encylopedic 434-page Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania in 1890 helped Pennsylvania secure a better understanding of the resident and seasonal wild birds that spent all or portions of their lives there. Warren, who worked as an ornithologist for the Pennsylvania State Board of Agriculture, used his book to cover species' natural history and distribution, but also focused on species' food habits "based on over 4000 stomach examinations."
Daniel Hartman Hastings (February 26, 1849 – January 9, 1903) was the 21st Governor of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1899. Hastings was called a hero for the help he gave Johnstown after the dam broke in 1889 (Johnstown Flood) and became governor in 1894.
