Description: The illustrations by Masayuki Yabuuchi include six color plates and several line drawings. The bulk of this book comprises the species accounts. Every species recorded to the end of 1989 is included. For each species there are details of past and current distribution and status, with information on breeding, migration, ecology, behavior and, where relevant, voice, as well as a distribution map. There is special emphasis on the endemic and near-endemic species. This is based on more than ten years' field experience and incorporates in-depth research into the English and Japanese literature from 1700 to the present day. The extensive bibliography of Japanese ornithology is the only one available in English.
