About This Item
Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1885. First edition.. The rear side (verso) of some plates show a touch of faint foxing, all of the text and hand-colored plates are very bright and clean, the recent half-morocco binding is very attractive; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. (2), 7-198; with 22 hand-colored plates and 1 monochrome map, 2 text-figures. Recent one-half straight-grained green morocco leather, spine with five raised bands titled in gilt on black leather and red leather labels in two compartments, over English pale green marbled boards with pale green endpapers (original printed green wrappers bound in at rear), 4to (287 x 225 cm). This volume provides the synonymy, description of plumage, and notes for each species. The hand-colored plates in this copy are particularly bright and clean. This work was issued in four parts dated 1844 (parts 1-3) and 1885 (part 4); the edition was limited to 300 copies only. There is no limitation page in the volume but the front wrapper of each part is labeled with a small red number of 291 (part 1), 245 (part 2), 168 (part 3) and 256 (part 4). Since the highest of these numbers is 291, it seems to confirm an edition of only 300 copies. The wrapper of part 1 has been slightly trimmed with no effect to the text. The title page bears the small name-stamp of ornithologist Ed N. Harrison. There are no other ownership marks of any kind. See also Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 87, Wood, p. 300 and Zimmer, p. 138.
